Performance Evaluation and Implementation of Optimization Scheme for Encryption Processing in a Long-Latency Environment

Abstract

IP-SAN constructed with an iSCSI over TCP/IP and Ethernet has been proposed and become available to the public. Traditional SAN (FC-SAN) is built using storage-specific hardware and has distance limitation. On the contrary, IP-SAN reduces storage management costs and provides a possibility to realize a large scale storage system on wide area networks, compared with FC-SAN. In the case of accessing remote storage, because IP-SAN is built on open networks, it is important to communicate securely. However, performance degradation by inefficient encryption processing on IP-SAN is a serious issue.

In this paper, we have implemented middleware optimized for encryption processing more efficiently compared with traditional method using IPsec. Furthermore, we have evaluated the performance of the middleware. As a result of the experiments, our system achieves better performance than that of a system using IPsec, especially in a long-latency environment.
